Data Requests

The Office of the State Auditor (OSA) is committed to transparency and protecting personal information. Learn how to request government data, access data about yourself, and understand your rights under Minnesota law.

Data Practices

The Minnesota Government Data Practices Act gives the public the right to access government data while protecting information classified as private or confidential by law. The OSA is committed to maintaining transparency, safeguarding personal information and responding to data requests in accordance with Minnesota law.

Whether you are requesting public government data or seeking access to data about yourself, the information below explains your rights and how to submit a request.

Request Public Data

Most government data maintained by the OSA is public unless a state or federal law classifies it differently.

You may request to:

  • Inspect public government data at no charge.

  • Receive copies of public data (copying and other applicable fees may apply).

  • Request data in a specific format if it is readily available in that format.

When submitting a request, describe the information you're seeking as clearly as possible so staff can locate the requested records.

Request Data About Yourself

If the OSA maintains data about you, you have the right to:

  • Find out whether the OSA maintains data about you.

  • Inspect public and private data about yourself.

  • Request copies of your data.

  • Challenge the accuracy or completeness of certain data as provided by law.

To protect your privacy, you may be asked to verify your identity before private data can be released.

How We Process Requests

The OSA responds to data requests as promptly as reasonably possible. Response times may vary depending on the scope and complexity of the request.

If requested data is not public, or if the Office does not maintain the requested records, you will be informed accordingly. If fees apply for copies of data, you will be notified before copies are provided.

Questions or Assistance

If you have questions about Minnesota's Government Data Practices Act or need assistance submitting a request, contact the OSA. Staff are available to explain the request process, applicable fees and your rights under the law.
